After polishing their recipe for the pita almost 25 years ago, the family behind The Perfect Pita aimed to improve another aspect of the Turkish-meets-American cuisine they dish out at 16 Northern Virginia locations and a growing number of grocery stores: the way people eat hummus.
Their hummus in a bottle was the first of its kind when it hit the shelves (or, since it eschews preservatives, the refrigerated section) in 2016. From black olive to jalapeno, the brand’s five flavors of squeezables hit a nerve with lovers of the chickpea-based spreads who were ready for an alternative to the open-and-dip containers.
“One of the complaints from moms was that their kids double dip,” says Erica Dodd, vice president and daughter of founder Atilla Kan. “We have the tubs, too, but it’s nice to be able to squeeze it on for your kids or at the office—or so you don’t sit down and eat a whole tub.”
The hummus and food for the shops is prepared in a 10,000-square-foot facility in Springfield, where the brand is working on a private hummus line for Whole Foods Markets.
The squeezable bottles, along with Perfect Pita’s hummus tubs and bread, are available at the brand’s stores and at many Whole Foods, Safeway and Wegmans locations.
