Those looking to celebrate the end of 2024 now have one less thing to worry about. Metro announced it will be providing rides free of charge on both Metrorail and bus lines on New Year’s Eve.
The free fares start at 8 p.m. on December 31 and run until 2 a.m. on January 1. The free rides are part of a partnership with Miller Light and Coors Light’s free rides program in order to ensure everyone gets home safely.
Once faregates are open, you won’t need a SmarTrip card to enter Metro stations. Bus riders won’t need to tap between those hours either.
Metrorail will also be open an extra two hours on New Year’s Eve. The last train time will vary by station — add two hours to the time listed on the stations page to know when to be at your stop. On January 1, Metro will operate on its reduced Sunday Service schedule.
During holidays, parking is also free at all Metro-owned garages and lots. Service will return to its normal schedule on January 2.
