Big changes are coming for Fairfax Connector riders — including a convenient trip that will bring commuters from Virginia to Maryland.
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation announced that, starting September 16, the new Express Route 798 will shuttle riders from Tysons to Bethesda, Maryland.
The route will have five stops:
- Tysons West Park Transit Station
- Tysons Metrorail Station
- Westfield Montgomery Mall Transit Center
- Rockville Pike and South Drive (near the Medical Center Metro)
- Montgomery Lane and East Lane in downtown Bethesda
This new route is designed to provide convenient access to employment centers such as the National Institutes of Health, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and downtown Bethesda, according to a news release from Fairfax County.
“This service will be especially important during the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) construction of extended Express Lanes,” which are expected to reach “substantial completion” by December 2025, the news release said.
This is a weekday rush hour service with drop-and-go service. Express fare is $4.80 one-way, with a discounted rate of $2.40 for seniors and people with disabilities.
Other Route Changes
In addition to Route 798, several other Fairfax Connector routes will undergo service changes beginning September 14.
Route 558 in Reston will split into two routes. The northern portion of the route will remain Route 558, while the southern portion will become Route 559.
Route 494 will now serve the Springfield Community Business Center Commuter Parking Garage and improves frequency.
Route 371 will replace Routes 372 and 373 and will improve frequency.
