Election Day in Virginia is Tuesday, November 7, but the voting begins Friday. Here’s where you can vote in Northern Virginia, and who’s on the ballot.
Dates to Know
If you’re not registered to vote yet, you can go to the Virginia Department of Elections registration site to find out how. The deadline for a regular registration is Monday, October 16. Starting this year, you can register after that, all the way up to Election Day, but if you do, you’ll be filling out a provisional ballot, and the registrar’s office will meet after the election to determine whether it’s valid.
The deadline to request a mail-in or absentee ballot (in Virginia, they’re the same thing) is 5 p.m. on Friday, October 27. You can apply for a ballot online and you don’t need to give a reason.
If you’re voting in person on Election Day, you can find your polling place on the Virginia Department of Elections website.
If you’re voting in person, whether early or on Election Day, bring an ID. You can use a photo ID such as a driver’s license, but that’s no longer required. You can use:
- A current utility bill;
- A bank statement;
- A government check;
- A paycheck;
- Another government document with your name and address;
- An expired Virginia driver’s license (it doesn’t matter how long ago it was).
If you do not bring an ID, you can still cast an in-person ballot. According to the state elections department, “Any voter who does not present acceptable identification may instead sign a statement, subject to felony penalties, that they are the named registered voter who they claim to be. Any voter who does not present acceptable identification or sign this statement must vote a provisional ballot.”
Alexandria
You’ll be voting in the 3rd District state Senate race between Republican Sophia Moshasha and Democrat Adam Ebbin. Depending on your district, you’ll be voting in one of three House races. Only one is contested: the 3rd District, with Democrat Alfonso Lopez and Independent Maj. Mike Webb are in the running.
You can check your precinct, and thus your House district, on the Alexandria Board of Elections website.
You can vote at the registrar’s office, at 132 N. Royal St., Ste. 100, weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (except for October 9). It also will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, October 28, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, October 29. The office will be open late the last week of early voting — 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Monday, October 20, through Thursday, November 2. Then it’ll be open the last day of early voting, which is Saturday, November 4, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
You can also vote at the Charles E. Beatley Jr. Central Library, at 5005 Duke St., in the runup to the early voting deadline.
