Nearly 25,000 dangerous drivers received citations during the Fairfax County Police Department’s 2023 Road Shark campaign.
More than 1,300 of the citations have been for reckless driving, the department said in a news release.
The 2023 campaign where police looked for aggressive drivers, speeders, drunken drivers, school zone violators, and distracted drivers came in four waves, the first of which started in March. The second enforcement wave by county and state police came in June, the third in July, and the fourth ended in August.
The police issued more citations and warnings with each wave of Road Shark:
- Wave 1 — 3,786 citations and warnings;
- Wave 2 — 5,025 citations and warnings;
- Wave 3 — 5,848 citations and warnings;
- Wave 4 — 9,892 citations and warnings.
“Road Shark has contributed to the overall year-to-date reduction in crashes and a year-to-date increase in DWI arrests,” the release said.
Additionally, the police said fatal crashes are down 55 percent so far this year.
The police have been using the enforcement effort ever since 1999. It was created in response to an increased number of crashes and aggressive drivers.
