A Burke man who police said was driving nearly double the speed limit on Burke Centre Parkway has been arrested for involuntary manslaughter in a crash that left one teen dead and three others in critical condition last month.
Jose Angel Zelaya, 42, is being held without bond.
The July 18 crash killed Rebekah Zarco, 17, a recent graduate of Robinson Secondary School. Zarco had been preparing to go to George Mason University’s School of Engineering in the fall, her obituary said.
Her brother, David, and two other Robinson Secondary students remain hospitalized.
The crash just after 9 p.m. occurred as Zarco, who was driving a Kia Forte, was pulling out of the Burke Centre Shopping Center. The police said the driver of a 2014 Cadillac XTS4 struck the Kia, which then burst into flames. The speed limit along that stretch of Burke Centre Parkway is 40 mph.
Fairfax County police are again asking people who saw the crash to call 703-280-0543 or Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS.
A fundraising effort through GoFundMe set up to assist the victims of the crash has surpassed its $20,000 goal.
Meanwhile, a petition on Change.org is calling for traffic light to be added to Burke Centre Parkway at the site of the crash. More than 2,200 people have signed the petition.
