Two individuals were killed Wednesday night when a moped they were riding crashed on the westbound lane of the Dulles Toll Road.
The crash, which took place at approximately 9:40 p.m., occurred near the Wolf Trap exit, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority officials said.
Police arrived at the scene to find one person, 23-year-old Nyjell Dae Quan Lewis, deceased. Kia Renee Hobbs, 20, was transported to a local hospital where she later died. Authorities believe Lewis, of DC, was driving the moped, while Hobbs, of Suitland, Maryland, was the passenger.
The incident is believed to have been a single-vehicle crash. However, civilians monitoring police scanners shared information suggesting another vehicle may have been involved, according to an FFXnow report.
The Dulles Toll Road shut down for hours in the wake of the crash as crews assembled on scene. It eventually reopened the following morning.
The crash is still under investigation.
