Ground is Moving at Old Lorton Prison Site
Liberty Crest at Laurel Hill is a $188 million project from Alexander Co. and Elm Street Development that will construct, through a two-phase process, a mixed-use housing community. Fairfax County will contribute $12.7 million for the design and construction of public spaces within the last remaining 80-acre section of the old prison site. The first phase of the project (165 apartments, 83 townhomes and 24 single-family homes) will incorporate the majority of the historical structures on the site and is expected to be completed in 2017.
$140M Bus Rapid Transit Line Looked at as Economic Driver
The Alexandria City Council has thrown its full support behind a $140 million bus rapid transit line linking the Van Dorn Street and Pentagon Metro stations. The line will consist of 2.2 miles of bus-only lanes along with 2.3 miles of sidewalk improvements, pedestrian safety improvements and traffic signals. The project is expected to save users 18 minutes per trip, save drivers $1,300 per year in commuting costs and ignite interest in the area for the possible construction of 10.2 million square feet of new mixed-use development.
